Color Consultation, Kitchen Cabinets

Recently I was hired to specify a shade of white for kitchen cabinets.  This family has a beautiful 1920s bungalow, and the kitchen they inherited from the previous owner had been fairly recently renovated, but needed a little tweaking in order to realize it’s full potential and truly honor the style of the home.  They decided to do a mini kitchen makeover by painting the cabinets, installing a classic subway tile back splash and new hardware, and making a few other minor changes.

As I do with all first-time clients, I scheduled a 90 minute consultation.  We started in the kitchen, and my client showed me the features that would not be changed in the makeover (granite counters, floor, appliances), and I pulled out my large scale color boards to hone in on the perfect white for the cabinets.

I quickly narrowed down our options and the perfect shade became obvious.  We discussed what shade of white to use for the subway tiles, and within 30 minutes, the color specification was complete!  We spent the remainder of the consult talking through other design questions she had, and were able to accomplish a lot more than she had originally expected.

Yesterday I was so happy to find my client had emailed pics of the newly refreshed kitchen, and it looks beautiful!  She now has a truly timeless, classic kitchen that will feel fresh and beautiful for decades to come.

When choosing hard finishes for homes (floors, cabinetry, tiles, etc), I always strongly encourage clients to go with classic choices.  It may feel like you’re making boring selections, but that’s just a sign that it will be a timeless design.  Bring in more color and style in the wall color and accessories!  In 5 years when you’re ready for a change, it will be much easier to change those than the cabinets and tile.
